Cerebral Palsy: chronic conditions that affect muscle coordination and body movement. Caused by damage to the brain during development or shortly after.
Type 1- Juvenille (up to age 30). Can not produce insulin.
Type 2- Adult Onset. non insulin dependent. Caused by diet and exercise.
**Characteristics and treatment will vary greatly**
- stiff and difficult movements- involuntary or uncontrolled movements- disturbed depth perception- poor sense of balance- more likely to have non motor impairments( hearing impairment)
- Physical therapists- ophthalmologists- audiologists- speech and language exercises- developing motor skills- placement in classroom- shape of chair and desk- augmentative communication systems- extra time
- hip and back problems- difficulty sitting for long periods of time-little to now bladder control- little lower body control
- Feelings of social isolation- frequent bathroom breaks when needed- hands on activities- classroom layout accessible for wheelchairs and crutches- aware of symptoms of pain from medical conditions
- coughing, wheezing, tightness, excessive sputum.
- know action plan- have an inhaler if necessary in school/classroom- teach student breathing exercises- know students triggers
- Cushion head- loosen around neck- turn on side- put nothing in mouth- don't hold them down- clear the room/area

- sweats- high heart rate- frequent urination- thirst- headaches- fruity breath
- have a schedule to check their blood sugar- know the symptoms of low blood sugar of a student- allow them to leave the room to check level/inject- consult with parents about best approach

- Sensory deficits affecting vision, hearing, taste, smell or touch- decreased motor cognition- difficulty breathing- dizziness- headaches- impaired balance- decreased attention- decreased organizational skills- memory deficits- poor concentration- slowed info processing- word finding difficulty- aggressive behavior- denial- depression- impulsivity- difficulties maintaining relationships- insensitive to feelings- social isolation
- clear short rules- instructions in steps- allow extra time to test/assignments- allow speaking time- medical attention
